US Troops Used White Phosphorous in Iraq

White Phosphorous used in Iraq

The US has admitted using white phosphorous as a weapon when they attacked Falluja in Iraq last year. They refused to sign the international treaty banning its use against civilians and continue to deny that it is a banned chemical weapon.

White phosphorous is highly flammable and ignites on contact with oxygen. People hit by this substance suffer from the most hideous burns and the chemical is capable of burning through to the bone.

US troops have nicknamed the substance "shake and bake" and Colonel Venable said they use it to flush out enemy troops "The combined effects of the fire and smoke - and in some case the terror brought about by the explosion on the ground - will drive them out of the holes so that you can kill them with high explosives,"

Given that one of the main criticisms of Saddam was his use of chemical weapons this is yet more hypocrisy from the corrupt US government.
